Tevékenységünk fókusza az ökológiailag fenntartható, emberi közösségekre és többi fajra kiterjedő igazságosság szerinti, a planetáris egészséget támogató folyamatok vizsgálata, valamint az egyetem demokratikus, aktív és hatásos szerepvállalása ezekben a kérdésekben. Ennek érdekében inter- és transzdiszciplináris, kvalitatív, élmény-alapú, részvételi és akció-orientált kutatási és oktatási módszereket alkalmazunk, és törekszünk a társadalmi igazságosság és fenntarthatóság irányába történő elmozdulást támogató egyetemi közösségi szerepvállalási folyamatok bevezetésére, működtetésére, terjesztésére és intézményesítésére
Az Intézet koordinálja az SZTE Közgazdaságtani Doktori Iskola angol nyelven futó, „Ökológiai közgazdaságtan” képzési programját. Szoros együttműködésben dolgozunk a Környezeti Társadalomkutatók (ESSRG) Kutatócsoporttal,a Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem Ökológiai Közgazdaságtan Kutatóközpontjával, és számos helyi civil szervezettel.
