Onboarding freshmen social programmes

We continued our tradition of welcoming our newly admitted students to the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Business Administration and Management.

Under the guidance of Dr. Ildikó Pusztai-Varga, Director of International Affairs, and Melinda Kovács, International Relations Coordinator, the mentor team worked hard to make the freshmen’s transition as smooth as possible. The programs not only helped students become familiar with Szeged and university life but also strengthened the growing sense of community between mentors and first-year students.

Orientation Day: First Steps into the Faculty

On September 11, the Faculty held its Orientation Day, dedicated to greeting international students in person after many months of preparation and correspondence. The event provided essential information about university procedures, academic programs, and student services, while also assisting students with enrollment paperwork.

The day opened with a welcoming speech from the Dean, followed by informative sessions on university policies, student support opportunities, and faculty life. Afterward, mentors guided students on a campus tour, introducing them to key facilities and resources. The event concluded with informal discussions where students met faculty members and peers, asked questions, and began building valuable connections. The day set a positive tone for the semester, helping new students feel both confident and at home in their new environment.

Discovering Szeged: The Annual Treasure Hunt

There is something special about beginnings, moments filled with curiosity and potential. The Faculty’s annual treasure hunt on September 19 captured this perfectly. Freshmen were divided into teams, paired with their mentors, and set out across Szeged to solve clues that led them through the city’s landmarks and hidden gems. Beyond finding the next destination, the teams discovered something more important: each other.

By the end of the day, the city had become their classroom, and the once-strangers had become teammates, sharing stories and laughter. The event concluded at the Erzsébet Park, where the air thickened with laughter and the smell of pizza. Because sometimes, all it takes is a shared meal under open skies to turn introductions into friendships.

Szarvas Excursion: Learning Beyond the Classroom

The onboarding program continued with a memorable excursion to Szarvas. The mentors and freshmen enjoyed a scenic boat tour along the Körös River. As the captain narrated stories of local history, Dr. Ildikó Pusztai-Varga provided translation, ensuring that every student could fully engage with the experience.

Following the river cruise, the group explored the botanical garden, where students wandered among its paths and peacocks before gathering for lighthearted icebreaker activities. These moments of shared laughter and storytelling built a genuine sense of connection, all over another round of pizza and good company.

The visit concluded at Mini Magyarország, an impressive open-air exhibition that showcases Hungary and Transylvania in miniature. With Dr. Ildikó’s insightful translations, students learned not only about what was built but also about the history and meaning behind each landmark. On the journey home, the bus filled with a fitting end to a day defined by curiosity, camaraderie, and discovery.

Building Community for the Year Ahead

These programs left more than just memories; they created a sense of belonging. The freshmen returned not only with photos and stories but with the confidence that they are now part of a community that supports and inspires them. Thanks to the dedication of the mentor team, guided by Dr. Ildikó Pusztai-Varga and Melinda Kovács, the newest members of our Faculty began their studies at the University of Szeged feeling informed, connected, and ready to take their next steps together.
